The Riley was intended as a small sports saloon and was a sprightly performer. It was a fairly common sight in saloon car racing over a number of years. In 1965 it was dropped in favour of the front-wheel drive Riley Kestrel and Wolseley 1100, the final additions to the new BMC badge-engineered family.
